Milan Fashion Week Spring 2011: Prada

I am at a loss for words when it come to describing Prada’s recently unveiled Spring 2011 Collection. Vibrant? Yes. Colorful? Yes. Tasteful? Not so much – which is highly disappointing, considering this was the season – I had very much hoped – Prada’s handbag collection would finally bounce back from the last couple of bland runway shows with new-found elegance and style that many of us so love the brand for!

Instead, very far from being the case, the collection was nothing more – or less – than just COLORful garments and handbags coming down the runway. Nothing intriguing, or new, or out of the (extra)ordinary in terms of design. Sure, not all garments necessarily need to be as intricate as Alexander McQueen’s are in order to stun us, the audience, – nonetheless, even the simplest designs have shown to achieve this effect at times. Many of us actually appreciate the beauty of simplicity, less being more, and accessorizing with color to create a stand-out look – n’est-ce pas? So how could Prada get it so wrong?

Perhaps their greatest setback was the absence of creativity and originality in the design room. If you are the least bit familiar with Louis Vuitton’s Epi Leather Montaigne Clutch, no doubt you have spotted the resemblance of this season’s Prada bags to the Mongaigne Clutch’s frame. This makes one really wonder, are there any creative juices left in Prada to showcase more than just the colorful copycats that were this spring season’s bags?

Fashionably Late

dress & bag, dvf; shoes, jeffrey campbell

Another glimpse at my outfit for DVF's fashionably late show at The Liberty Hotel {also in my last post}. I had way too many taken of my outfit to not make a blog post. My dress really is my favorite piece from Diane's spring 2011 collection and had to be taken out for the show. I just love how the dress becomes an accessory and not much else is needed. I wore my hair up (something I rarely do) in a tight ballerina bun to let the dress, its detail, and colors shine. I couldn't have been happier with the outcome of drinks, friends, and fashion.

a good read, cool mom points & the mystic

i finished whistlin' dixie in a nor'easter & thought it was a sweet read.
i think the sequel is due later this year.

the main character is a southern belle who moves up to vermont & opens a b&b.
something dan & i have always talked about.
when leelee mentions her favorite song is 'into the mystic' by van morrison
& then later has an impromptu dance with her man in the snow,
it totally sealed the deal for me.

in honor of madison's upcoming 16th birthday
i'm reading her absolute favorite book,
Pride and Prejudice
( embarrassingly for the first time).

have i mentioned she's read it over 4 dozen times?
honestly, i think she's trying to reach the 50th marker before her birthday on wednesday.
she is a hard core fanatic when it come to her favorite literature.

i love to collect different versions of my favorite classics,
especially when they featured deckle edge pages.
here is a few from our pride & prejudice collection.
madison had 2 copies with her at school when i photographed these.

savannah told me about a conversation her buddies had at school.
they were saying , wouldn't it be great if your parents were cool.
savannah, coming in on the tail end of the conversation
didn't realize they meant cool as in CIA cool or witness protection program cool
( as if)
so she chimes in that she thinks her parents are cool.
she said mom, i told them that you were cool.
that you have a photography blog
& you run long distances.
i didn't ask if her peers were impressed with my status or not
i chose simply to enjoy the fact that my very cool 18 year old
actually thinks i'm cool
& declared it in public.
i'll take it!

so i'm a roll~
i scored a few points by surprising emi.
she didn't think i'd ever heard of eminem.
imagine her surprise when i began singing the lyrics to one or two of his songs.
( not the explicit versions. of course)

only to quickly loose of few of those earned points
by mispronouncing the group named Flo Rida.
which incidentally i've already forgotten the correct pronunciation.
one step forward, two steps back. right?

of course i'm well aware that
if any of my older girls read this post
they'll roll their eyes.
however,  i'll take any affirmation i can get
even if it's only a fleeting moment,
while raising a 14 year old, 16 year old & an 18 year old!
remember, little one is only 9
she has a few more years of thinking i'm cool
before she goes to the dark side
also known as middle school age
:)

& for you van morrison fans......

A Look Inside Japan’s Vogue March 2011 Issue

Another weekend, another Vogue issue. As I try to decipher Japanese calligraphy in order to begin to navigate my way through the inside pages of Japan’s Vogue March 2011 Issue, I realize Voguevitis has officially taken hold of me, yet again. To fill you in, Voguevitis is the term I’ve coined to describe that mental state that comes over me occasionally whereby I lose the ability to stop looking at all things Vogue, even if they are incomprehensible to me, such as in the present case.
If I am to be honest with you, I think you can only truly begin to understand this if you are familiar with foreign Vogue issues, such as the Vogue Nippon (Japan). A sensational issue, every time, Japan’s Vogue is not only on top of all the international trends, but also its own. The March 2011 issue is actually a great example of this. On the cover, you have Izabel Goulart - a Brazilian beauty that has walked the runways for fashion designers including but not limited to Chanel, Balenciaga, Michael Kors, and Oscar de la Renta, wearing a current design from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2011 collection; while on the inside you have pieces from this Spring’s collections from around the world mixed and matched to create that edgy colorful punk style seen on the streets of Japan – which BTW, is considered to be its own subculture.
And if you doubt you’ll ever see these looks on the streets, well think again. Just google “Japanese street fashion” or go to Japanese Streets (a favorite site of mine) and you’ll find similar if not more over-the-top kind of stuff.

Fashionably Late: DVF / SP11

me decked out in dvf for the show
with blogger Jess, Hell or High Fashion

I got the pleasure to enjoy Diane von Furstenberg's fashion show at the Liberty Hotel this week. The old jail turned into four-star hotel was the perfect place for the fashion show to take place. Couches and chairs lined the outside of the runways for you to sit and have service. My drink of choice was the Bellini (half champagne, half fresh peach juice). For some reason when I see it on the menu no matter what time of day I need to order it. Since it was a DVF show I wore my favorite flow-y dress from the Spring '11 line. The slip underneath hugs my body while the silk flows effortlessly - it's heavenly. And I could not pass up the chance to finish off my outfit with my litas. They look sky high in these pictures!
